-Be able to explain their life/contributions to Florida
-Work in small groups to create a word document highlighting the key contributions of the individual.
-Present the information to the class and pass out the handouts they made

Student Activities & Procedures
Teacher Activities/Student Activities
· What best practice strategies will be implemented?
· How will you communicate student expectation?
· What products will be developed and created by students?

This is the heart of the lesson plan. Be as specific as possible. Describe lesson in a step-by-step, numbered sequence, including teacher and student activities. Be sure to include key questions for discussion, collaborative structures, etc. (This section includes EVERYTHING1)
1. Begin by asking the class if anyone is familiar with any important people that contributed to Florida’s growth or development? Take volunteers and have the students tell you what they know.
2. Write a list on the board of the names that are given to you by the students. Then, inform the students of the five main Floridians they will be focusing on: Ernest Hemingway, Frank Lloyd Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, Walt Disney, and Henry Morrison Flagler.
3. Split the students up into 5 groups (about 4-5 students per group depending on class size.)
4. Take them to the media center. Have each group research their famous person on the computer. They may also use any books/journals they find in the Media Center for additional resources.
5. Have them create a “who, what, where, when, how” of their individual. Each group should come up with a one-page summary (it can be in bulleted format) of key facts outlining the life and contributions of their individual. This must include the reason they are so important in Florida history. Include at least five facts about their individual.
6. The students will type this information in a word document. Each group will print out enough sheets for the entire class. The must include a minimum of two pictures.
7. Each group will have about 5 minutes to present their individual to the class. Each student will have 5 “who, what, where, when, how” handouts to add to their Florida folder at the end of the week.
8. Inform the students that tomorrow they will be learning about tourism and to keep in mind how these individuals affected Florida tourism. Ask them to make predictions about weather or not they think tourism increased or decreased after these individuals- write a response in their Writers Notebook.

Assessment
· How will student learning be assessed? Authentic/Alternative assessments?
· Are you using a rubric?
· Informal assessment: participation rubrics, journal entries, collaborative planning/presentation notes
Be sure to include Pre/Post assessment in your lesson plans!
Pre-Assessment:
Before beginning this lesson, have a class discussion and ask students if they know of any important Floridians. Prompt their prior knowledge by asking them if they have been to Disney World before or any of the beaches along the peninsula. Have them share personal experiences and write down any names they come up with on the board.

Post-Assessment:
Have the students choose any one out of the five individuals they learned about and write he/she a letter. This letter should include any questions the student has for the person, or anything they would want them to know. It can thank them for their contribution or ask them for advice. (This should be written as if the person is still alive today) Have the students add this letter to their Florida folder that they make at the end of the week.

This lesson is a good introduction to Day 5: Tourism. The famous people they learn about, such as Walt Disney, will give them an introduction on their impact in Florida tourism.

Exceptionalities

What accommodations do you make for ESOL, Gifted/Talented students, Learning/Reading disabilities, etc
ESOL/SLD:
Gifted/Talented: ESOL students will be placed in groups according to their level. They will be able to act out anything while presenting, and they may include pictures or clip art in their handout to make a picture/text connection.

Discussion Notes

Make comments here related to ideas for homework, parent involvement, extension to the unit plan or lesson ideas, etc.
At the end of the week, students will compile a “Florida folder” where they keep all the information/handouts they gathered throughout the week. They can take this home and share it with their families. This lesson plan is a building block to the following day’s lesson, tourism, so make sure you remind them to think about their individual’s impact to tourism throughout the lesson.
